The Impact of Flood Provisions in the Florida Building Code

The start of this year has seen the 6th Edition of the Florida Building Code (FBC) apply its revised Flood Resistant provisions.

By law, the flood provisions of the FBC that govern flood-resistant design of buildings in mapped flood zones (special flood hazard areas) supersede local regulations that are not consistent with the FBC.

The FBC 6th edition coincides with FEMA's release of updated Floodplain Maps.

Communities are required to update local floodplain ordinances in accordance with the FBC. Florida Division of Emergency Management (DEM) provides a Model Ordinance to help with this process.
